Which came first, the doughnut or the mug?

Which came first, the doughnut or the mug? is a full-scale model of a climbing frame. The structure is inspired by a shopping centre; it mimics escalators specifically for the way in which they control spatial movement in a public space. Having a step like tier system to indicate up and a ‘slide’ (scaffold section) placed at a 30-degree angle to indicate down.
The title of the climbing frame is in reference to a topological example, which states that a mug and a doughnut are the same thing. By placing a doughnut in the centre of a climbing frame I hope to represent a food court in the middle of the shopping centre. The title not only helps to suggest this by conjuring an image of a cafe, but it also appropriates a common philosophical saying ‘Which came first, the chicken or the egg?’ to encourage questions on sequences and draw attention to everyday objects.
